When considering ways to add bold colors into your home, you have tons of options — big and small, budget-friendly or splurge-worthy. If you’re on the adventurous side with your decor, you could consider a colorful sofa. Or maybe you want to go smaller with something like a set of coasters or taper candles. One spot you might not have considered for a pop of color, though? Your windows — and I’m not talking curtains or shades. Do as these creative renters did and hone in on your curtain rod, even if it’s not being used on a window.

Just like the city of New Orleans itself, the Meyers’ home is vibrant and full of personality. “Bold colors and pattern are my biggest inspiration,” says Thibodeaux Meyer. “Color is usually my starting point for any kind of creative project, whether that be decorating a room or making a costume.” As a result, every space in this couple’s home is uniquely decorated with small but high-impact colorful details. You’ll find one striking, unexpected example of this in the living room, where Thibodeaux Meyer appears to have spray-painted her curtain rod cobalt blue so it pops against the white walls and neutral curtains that create a makeshift divider in between the entryway and living room.

Although the living room’s walls are white and the sectional sofa is beige, the room is anything but boring, thanks to books and artwork scattered around the space, as well as a pom-pom garland on the mantel. The rod, which echoes the blue hue in the garland’s poms, helps to draw the eye upward from the mantel, creating a visual eye path that, in conjunction with the flowy curtains, makes the space seem even airier and the ceilings taller.

While this is a relatively simple DIY project to take on, you might want to keep a few things in mind before you start. First, select a color that’ll attract some attention and make sure your formula is suited to your curtain rod material (whether it’s plastic or metal). Spray-paint projects should also be done with proper ventilation — the outdoors are ideal for putting on a couple of coats, allowing for dry time in between. Above all, though, customizing the finish of a curtain rod with a bold paint is a simple, budget-friendly solution to spruce up your space. “Don’t let lack of funds stop you from rolling up your sleeves and making your house feel like a home,” Thibodeaux Meyer says.
