Carrie, her husband, their toddler, a cockapoo, and a cat have shared this 1930s semi for five years: A semi-project when we bought it, we’ve been slowly turning it into our dream family home. We’ve fully renovated downstairs (including a kitchen diner knock through) and reimagined the bathroom completely. The bedrooms are a work in progress, but we’re playing the long game, as we plan on extending upwards into the roof space when budgets allow.

We knew we wanted a character property (after previously living in a new build), and the stained glass curb appeal really drew us towards this one. The views out the back swung the decision when looking, though — I mean, how could you not fall for that green countryside over yonder?

The rooms have evolved over the years. And without a lottery win, they will continue to evolve slowly. But it’s allowed us to try things, rethink them, and not rush into anything drastic. There are always ideas percolating and waiting to happen.

As a designer by trade, I’m naturally inspired by the aesthetics around me. And that means I get very excited about decor — you’ll more likely find me swooning over textiles and plant pots than the latest “heartthrob.”

That translates into the home we’ve built. Quirky features, an unhealthy amount of musical references — my home is definitely an extension of me and my family.

Describe your home’s style in five words or fewer: Modern-yet-traditional. Musical. Green.

What is your favorite room and why? Currently, the living room.

It’s the space we spend most time in. Family time. Throwing a record on. Lazing in front of the TV. Hosting guests. Playing make believe.

We love the mid-century modern aesthetic and have slowly been bringing those influences in — investing in some pricey pieces, and trying to do other things on a budget.

I’m also pretty pleased that we’ve created a space that is a playroom by day, but by night there’s no trace of toddler whatsoever. Multifunctional for the win.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? I finally took the plunge and picked up this bad boy.

I’ve been eyeing it up for a while, and decided to treat myself. Can’t wait for it to arrive and give it pride of place behind the sofa.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Don’t feel like you have to keep up with trends. You do YOU. A space you have lovingly curated and put your soul into is the most perfect place on the planet — it’s home. Oh, and plants.
